Fixing a slow computer is a real big problem. Some of the causes behind a slow computer are less hard disk space, too many programs which have been installed causing total confusion, data getting corrupted, overheating of the computer and bad hardware.

Some steps which can be followed to speed up the computer are :
Very less hard disk space
If the hard disk space is only 2GB, upgrade the computer to at least 200 MB. In case you hard disk exceeds this, then it should at least have 500 MB of hard disk space. This free space allows the computer more space.
The other possibility is that the hard drive could either be fragmented or corrupted. Try running scandisk just to make sure the hard disk is running perfectly
The next option is to run the defragmentation so that there is proper arrangement of the data.
Background programs
Sometimes it so happens that there are many programs running automatically each time the computer is started.
Hardware conflicts
Identify if there are any conflicts with the Device Manager. In case you identify any problems, make sure you solve them.
Problems related to Windows XP
In case Windows XP are installed, make sure to delete the files in the directory. They are prefetch files which could slow down the process if they are not used.
In case you have installed Windows 95 or 98 and are not keen on installing the MS-DOS programs, then you need to do the following:
Press start, then run and press the command and then the enter key.
Computer gets heated up
Ensure that the PC and the processor do not get heated up; excess heat can lead to a decline in the performance of the computer. Some processors lead to deceleration in the speed of the processor.
The computer also faces basic troubleshooting problems. It is advised that you run the basic troubleshooting steps to get rid of the problems.
The other steps which can be followed are erasing the computer and starting all over again.
Inspite of taking all the abovementioned steps, it is advised that you reinstall Windows or delete everything and initiate all the steps all over again.
Hardware issues
In spite of all this, if the PC does not function normally, it is recommended that you go through all the recommendations and then there is more to it.
Your computer is facing a grave hardware related problem which could be a failing component related to the computer.
It is advised that you call the hardware computer engineer to settle problems. Do not attempt sorting out the problems, since it could do more harm than good. Let the professional do his job. Complicated hardware related problems can be sorted out only by a person who knows the job.
