Honestly, there are few things that are as frustrating as a slow computer. And the frustration that comes from computer slowness is understandable, given that people mostly invest in computer in order to speed things up and increase efficiency.
The major causes of computer slowness fall into three main categories, namely those that have to do with accumulation of clutter in the computer, those that have to do with infection of the computer by malware and those that have to do with hardware deficiencies. A closer look at each of these categories can shed light on how to overcome computer slowness – and make your computer the efficiency-booster it was meant to be.
Starting with the category of reasons behind computer slowness that have to do with accumulation of clutter in a computer, specific examples include programs that one installs one their computer and never gets to use, files that one creates, uses for whatever reasons he/she intends to use them for, and then forgets them in the computer –eating storage space while serving no useful purpose. Yet another form of clutter in a computer occurs in the form of registry entries (keeping in mind that the computer’s registry logs every operation the computer has to perform). Now the thing to do about this category of reasons behind computer slowness is to adopt a discipline of regular computer clean up. You might consider installing a good piece of PC clean up software, and running it regularly – or better still, presetting it to run automatically after so many days, so that you effectively automate the computer clean up task.
Turning to the category of reasons behind computer slowness that have to do with infection of the computer with various forms of malware, we find common culprits here being viruses, spyware and adware. Malware slows down a computer for a number of reasons. For one, all forms of malware are programs in their own rights – and are forever in competition for computing resources with the useful programs you have installed on your computer, especially given that most of these kinds of programs are created to run in the background at all times. Adware and Spyware, besides slowing down your overall computer speed, also tend to slow down your Internet connection as they tend to be connecting (through your Internet connection, of course) to the servers of their masters, telling them what you are doing on your computer so that the servers can serve you with relevant ads in the case of adware. Now the thing to do about these malware is to install a reputable anti-virus program on your computer, ensure that it is always running on the background – and more importantly – ensure that your anti-virus (and anti-spyware) programs is continually updated, as the malware are always evolving to stay ahead of the anti-virus programs.
Examples of reasons behind computer slowness that have to do with hardware deficiencies on the other hand are those that are, for instance, caused by low computer memory. The solution to these always lies down in proper diagnosis of the particular hardware deficiency slowing the computer and taking the necessary corrective action – like installing new memory chips on the memory card slots in your computer’s motherboard expansion slots.
